How long does it take to change a nameserver?

This guide explains how long it takes for a nameserver update to occur, and also how you can speed up the process if the site is still not working for you.

When you make a name server change, it takes effect immediately. How long you need to wait before the change is reflected on the internet depends on the top-level domains involved.

For .se and .nu, it takes 1-2 hours before the nameserver change becomes visible on the internet. This is because the Internet Foundation only updates the zone file every hour.

For .com, .net, and .org, the change occurs within a few minutes.

Why isn’t the change reflected for me?

If you have changed the name server on your .se domain and waited 2 hours but it still doesn’t work, it’s due to cache on your computer or network.

First, try visiting the page via Browserling. Browserling will show how the website looks without cache. If everything looks correct there but not on your computer, you have two options.

Either you can continue to wait, up to 72 hours but usually faster, or you can change the DNS server on your computer. If you choose to change the DNS server on your computer to Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 or Google 8.8.8.8, the cache will be cleared and your website will work for you immediately.
